Offered in cooperation with Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Science Museum of Virginia, Library of Virginia, and Institute of Museum and Library Services this program provides opportunities for exploring science and nature concepts as children and their families participate in learning activities, enjoy our state parks, and participate in informal learning options. The backpacks contain laminated sheets of discovery activities and information on visiting state parks and geocaching; information on the Virginia Trail-Quest; exploration tips; a large magnifier; and easy-catch net; a pop-up port-a-bug kit; and five field guides on Virginia birds, trees and flowers, animal tracks, mammals, bugs, and slugs. Each kit is also accompanied by a free park pass (a $66 value) to be used at any of the 36 Virginia state parks.
Each of the three branches of Handley Regional Library will have four backpacks available to checkout. Those interested in checking out a backpack should check with their circulation desk to be directed to the appropriate location to receive their pack. Packs are available now and will continue to be available through the fall, with plans to extend to a year round program already in the works. We hope to have the backpacks in continual use as we encourage our youth and their families to explore nature in our state parks.
